What is THCa?

THCa is a naturally occurring rare cannabinoid. It’s the “precursor” to THC, which means that THCa turns into THC when it’s decarboxylated, or heated up.

Will THCa Show Up in a Drug Test?

Unfortunately, yes. THCa will show up on a drug test. It turns into THC when it’s heated up, so your body metabolizes it in the same way as THC (because that’s what it is by the time you consume it).

If you’re worried about having to pass a drug test any time soon, it’s best to avoid THCa or any other psychoactive cannabinoid.

Are THC and THCa the Same Thing?

Sort of! THCa is kind of like the “inactive” form of THC that’s only present before you smoke it. Once you heat it up, it turns into THC.

Chemically speaking, THCa and THC are a little bit different. But if we’re talking about THCa diamonds versus THC diamonds, they’re basically the exact same thing!

Can THCa be Converted to THC?

Yes! THCa can be turned into THC through decarboxylation.

Decarboxylation sound familiar? It’s the same thing as “decarbing,” which is a super important step in making homemade edibles. It’s essentially heating the flower or concentrate up just a little bit to “activate” the THC and change the chemical structure so that it will get you high when you eat it.

Even if you’ve never made edibles from scratch, you’ve probably decarboxylated weed without knowing it: you’re technically decarbing weed any time you light a bowl, hit a vaporizer, or smoke a joint.

Where is THCa Legal?

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, THCa is legal in most states. You can order THCa online from your favorite smoke shop and have it shipped right to your door in most places.

Laws around hemp and weed are always changing, though, and we’re not lawyers. You should always check your local laws before buying or trying a new cannabis product.

Is THCa Like CBD?

In some ways. They’re both natural cannabinoids and they’re both legal when they come from hemp. They both have potential benefits, too.

There are also a lot of differences between the two cannabinoids, though. CBD is non-psychoactive, which means it won’t get you high. It is known to help support restful sleep, a positive mood, and can help with discomfort. THCa is psychoactive, which means it will get you high. There haven’t been many studies done on THCa specifically yet, but it is thought to have a ton of potential benefits as well.
